Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 is a made for TV series inspired by the original Bubblegum Crisis OVAs. A work of Cyberpunk-fiction, it takes place in a futuristic, post-earthquake Tokyo. Robots, known as boomers, are commonplace within the city and are responsible for performing a wide range of tasks. However, something is making the Boomers go rogue, and a group of female vigilantes has taken it upon themselves to put a stop to it.

In the year 2033, a great earthquake rocked the city of Mega-Tokyo, thousands of people died. Then, Genom came to the rescue, producing robots known as Boomers to help with the cleanup and subsequent rebuilding of the city. Tokyo became even bigger and grander than ever before.

The year is now 2040, and a serene city is tormented by their very own technology. The boomers that they have become dependent upon are going rogue one by one. The AD Police, which had been established to handle boomer crimes, has been tasked with taking out rogue boomer threats as they happen. However, the AD Police are quickly becoming overwhelmed by the rapidly advancing boomer technology.

Then, almost overnight, power-armor wearing vigilantes appeared. Calling themselves the Knight Sabers, they take it upon themselves to respond to and destroy rogue boomer threats, much to the chagrin of the AD Police. In their quest, the Knight Sabers uncover a plot to take over the world, leaving it up to them to stop it.
