Chapter Three
Vashnevskaya awakes in the lair of the robot, finding a boomer head begging him for death. Things begin to make sense then. Vashnevskaya recognizes part of the robot mech, even after three years.
It is a shift change at the ADP and Nene is crammed into the elevator with everyone else when she overhears a conversation about the memory module. She then gets off to go to the analysis lab.
The robot mech turns out to be a part of an incursion team. One of Europe’s last attempts at mechatronics before Genom and their boomers achieved their stranglehold on the market. The Skorpion19 was designed as an Anthology Intelligence. It was able to build a network of sub-unit mechs and computers, and then distribute its awareness through them. It would communicate with its team through “audio sample” (much like Bumblebee from Transformers). Vashnevskaya and his team had been hired by a European consortium to capture an “Intellectual Asset” belonging to Genom. However, Genom had been made aware of their intentions and sent combat boomers after them.
When Nene arrived at Comp/Analysis, she learns how they were able to decipher the code on the memory module. And the ego of the one who did it annoys her.
Vashnevskaya meanwhile, is watching the Skorpion reprogram one of the stolen combat boomers. He plans to use it to help retrieve the memory module.
Nene is on the phone reporting to Sylia when her fellow dispatchers rush in. There is a combat boomer loose in the city, and as many ADP troops as possible are being called in. Sylia and Linna are suiting up to go after it, and Priss is en-route to the pit.
The ADP is currently searching for the boomer, the fires interfering with their infra-red scanners. At the same time, Linna has found the boomer and fires at it. However, the boomer fires back. Sylia then engages and goes in for the kill.
Priss and Vashnevskaya are both suiting up and getting ready to go while Sylia and Linna watch the ADP begin to clean up. Sylia is concerned with some alterations she noticed to the boomer’s brain case.
Back at the ADP, they think the main excitement is over and stand to look over the city. Just then, the Skorpion bursts through the window and begins incapacitating the civilian technicians. As Vashnevskaya and the Skorpion go after the module, Nene calls Sylia for help. However, Priss and her motoslave are the only ones close enough to help.
As a Skorpion sub-unit begins to access the ADP computer system, Nene drops a computer monitor on it, but it attacks her. Priss arrives in time to pull it off of her. As Priss is hassling Nene, Vashnevskaya moves to deal with the new threat. He sends a coolant tank shooting at the motoslave, badly damaging it. In return, Priss fires the motoslave’s carbine rifle at the Skorpion. The rifle jams and Priss then resorts to hand to hand combat. Vashnevskaya, who was only trying to escape, wonders who she is and why she is beating him up. Priss recognizes the man inside the mech, only be shot by a mini-gun and knocked out the window in the process.
